The Most Famous Photograph in The World?
About a year ago, I was on a train to Scotland, and there was a man across the aisle with an open laptop..he was playing a film on it, and I had a look. It was ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ , the diary documenting the travels of the young medical student, Ernesto Guevara. I had heard of it, but never seen it. It was subtitled, and so I could follow the second hand screening on the train..till he shut the lid and got off the train! I was gasping! I didn’t see the end of the film!
I kept this in mind, and bought the film just the other week. Bought the diary/book too. Some people just can’t do subtitles, but it doesn’t put me off at all, I have many ‘world cinema’ titles on my shelves.
Of course I knew who Che Guevara was, but I had never investigated closer, till recently.
The film is superb, and the casting is perfect too. The young Mexican actor, Gael Garcia Bernal, plays the part of Ernesto/Che. The film has won awards. Go and buy this..’THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES’. There’s even a wee bit of dollymopping in it.
When it ended…I was uplifted and also forlorn..I wanted to see Ernesto becoming Che! Well I did…The mental transition, you can deduce from the film, but I wanted more.
No sooner thought than done…I discovered that director Steven Soderbergh has done just that, recently. Haven’t seen this yet..
2 films, ‘Che’ part one/two. Che is played by Benecio del Toro. (couldn’t have cast better myself)
Benecio del Toro is a respected actor, I imagine he’s a bit ‘Stanislavski/Strasberg method’ when approaching a role. I think this is gonna be good…
Argentinian by birth, Che Guevara was killed in Bolivia in 1967, aged 39. His body was found later in 1997, and now lies in Castro’s Cuba. Draw your own politics/views.
