What IS a ‘Dollymop’?

PhotobucketYou may wonder why I have chosen such an odd name…it sounds very silly.

Well, it’s not exactly a name..and ironic humour amuses me, and when I began posting chat in forums, like www.punterlink.com I chose ‘Dollymop’. Then , I added an extra ‘p’ to make it more personal, and also to stop myself being lost in searches.

The term ‘Dollymop’ is a Victorian word for a….I will let you search! Can you guess? Yes…I think so.

I love the history of dollymopping, and I like the fact that ‘my manor’ in 16th -18th century London (the first recorded ‘lady of negotiable virtue’ in this area, was in 1058) was the central hotbed of all things sordid and salacious…The Southbank/Bankside was the entertainment side, (take the the Globe theatre, for instance, or the Tate Modern) the City was the business side. That was London. If you read Defoe’s ‘Moll Flanders’, you will find many many references to my area, and ‘The Mint’ (Mint St is not far away!). Today, my area of London Bridge SE1 is becoming quite the place to be, new exp properties all around. I absolutely LOVE SE1.

So!.. I’m keeping up the ‘olde worlde’ tradition.. hehe…

See my ‘filthy books’ section for more history.
